On the Road Again… or Was That a Wagon?

On the wagon? Or off the wagon…

I have no idea which metaphor applies, since I’m not talking about alcohol.

A few weeks ago I posted “Eep!” as my update, since things were not going well.

The next week, I posted “Things are not much better…”

Last week, I missed posting an update altogether.

I’m keeping up with my regular writing commitments quite well. I always have an interview on Fridays, the SciFi Question of the day on Tuesdays, and on the fiction side I regularly have a new chapter of What Would Have Been up every Monday. In between, I have the occasional random post.

But my goal of writing 1k per day is in the crapper. Not permanently…bear with me, please, and next Wednesday I’ll post that I actually did 1k at least most days!

  1. Hi Amy! Life does get in the way of our best intentions, sometimes. Have you thought of revising your goal? You’re doing a fabulous job of keeping up on your blogging.

    • I have thought about it. Even though I’ve been “seriously” writing for more than a year now (Meaning I am actively working towards the goal of producing a novel(s) that will, hopefully, get published) I’m learning more about myself and my writing abilities every day. In the beginning, I had to closet myself away from all distractions for hours at a stretch in order to produce a few thousand words over a week. But after a few months, 1k/day became an easy thing for me. Unfortunately, if I don’t write for a day or two, I lose my “groove” and it takes me much longer to write 1k.

I need to either find a way to have a chunk of committed, uninterrupted time, or I need to learn to make better use of small chunks of time. We’ll see which happens! I don’t want to change the 1k/day goal yet, because I know I can do it. It has just taken a back seat to other priorities lately.

It sounds as if you may need to ease your plate down somehow, Amy. If you’re having trouble with finding decent “large chunks of time”, then try doing smaller ones. Have you tried doing things like the Twiiter wordsprints? (There are several for the ROW80 crew: #teamsprinty #wordsprint are both good searches to try)

As for changing the 1K goal… Maybe you should “change it for a week” or something. Part of the loosing the groove is feeling a failure the day before… Or set a 250 words by 10am, then another 250 words by 2pm, etc. You’ll get your 1K, but you’ll also be able to give yourself smaller goals to urge you on.

Just a thought. It’s a balancing act, that’s for certain.

Focus on what you’re going to do, not what you’ve not done.
1k a day is an amazing goal. Keep going. x
